In this lesson, we introduce ionic bonding — one of the three main types of chemical bonding. You’ll learn how metals and nonmetals combine by transferring electrons, forming charged particles called ions.
We’ll walk step-by-step through:
• How and why electrons are transferred
• The difference between cations (+) and anions (–)
• Why ionic compounds form in the simplest whole-number ratio
• How to correctly write formulas for ionic compounds
• Common charge patterns for frequently used ions
We’ll also practice writing formulas for compounds involving elements like aluminum, oxygen, sulfur, and transition metals.
By the end of this lesson, you should feel confident identifying ionic bonds and determining correct chemical formulas based on ion charges.
