One of the most important areas of BPD treatment is finding purpose and meaning. Part of the challenge of life is to find that purpose and this can give you a strong sense of meaning in your life. Your purpose is likely to be many things that vary in scope, some small like the person you make smile on a sad day, or grand like the person you encourage to seek mental health treatment or to check themselves into an in-patient unit, or guide your child’s life in a positive direction through encouragement.
Remember, if you weren’t here the world would be different. You’re impactful and you have the power to determine that impact. These things can give you meaning and help you define your purpose.
You may be confused about your purpose and meaning by anxiety, depression, personality disorders or other issues that cloud your judgment. When you have symptoms of these conditions, it’s not time to assess your meaning and purpose because you’re trying to deal with your dragon and demons and they’re distortion encouraging disorders.
When you’re calm, stable, and can evaluate yourself and your world beyond those conditions you can look inward and outward for purpose and meaning. Know this, research shows that meaning in life and optimism is significantly associated with life satisfaction and productive management of psychosocial problems.
Ask yourself these questions to help you find your purpose and meaning:
1. How can I give to others and impact the world in a positive way? You don’t have to be Mother Theresa, do small things to help other. Pay it forward at a coffee shop, help someone reach something on a high shelf,
2. Don’t give to get, give to give.
3. Surround yourself with people who lift you up. Assess your interactions with them and ask yourself how can I give back to them?
4. Explore your interests, if you don’t have any you can take an assessment called the Self Directed Search online to help you.
Lastly, be patient with yourself about your purpose and meaning. Maybe your purpose and meaning is to find peace with yourself and enjoy more sunsets, or walk on a beach or through a beautiful forest.
