At the center of the Indo-Pacific realm sits the Sulu Sea, a massive expanse of water where an extinct volcano rises from the floor to create the isolated sanctuary of Sipadan. This documentary follows the journey to the northeastern tip of Borneo to document a marine ecosystem that holds more biological diversity than almost anywhere else on the planet. From the vertical walls that plummet 3,000 feet into the dark abyss to the shallow gardens where green sea turtles and hawk bills congregate, the sheer volume of life is staggering. While many know these tropical waters for the massive schools of chevron barracuda and travali jacks that move with mechanical precision, few see the strange inhabitants of the nearby Mabul island. Here, we encounter the venomous lionfish, the camouflaged crocodile fish, and the elusive mandarin fish hiding among sea urchin spines. This story tracks the balance between the ocean’s oldest inhabitants and the modern pressures that threaten to silence the reef forever.
