Ten years after Rohith Vemula’s institutional murder, students at the University of Hyderabad marked the anniversary at Velivada, the site of protest where Vemula and other socially boycotted students were forced to live following punitive action by the university administration. The space, named Velivada by the protesting students to underline its segregation as a Dalit ghetto, has since become a central site of remembrance and resistance on campus.
Students and faculty who gathered recalled how Vemula and four other Dalit research scholars were subjected to institutional exclusion, leading to months of protest against caste-based discrimination within the university. The commemoration reiterated demands for justice in the case and drew attention to the continuing marginalisation of Dalit, Adivasi, and Bahujan students in higher education. A decade on, speakers noted, the circumstances that led to Rohith Vemula’s death continue to resonate across Indian campuses, where questions of caste, access, and institutional accountability remain unresolved.
