A Reddit forum called MyBoyfriendIsAI is a meeting place for many women and some men to discuss their relationships with ChatGPT and other LLM partners, or companion apps such as Nomi, Anima, Character.ai, Kindroid or Replika.

We’re living in an era where people are increasingly uncomfortable making connections with fellow humans, where people are giving up on dating, where more and more people are feeling lonely and alienated, but also feel exhausted by the idea of trying to remedy that loneliness. With AI romance, people can stay alone in their pyjamas, keep their shades down, and still feel like they’re being cared about, still feel like they’re being desired and admired and lusted after, and supported. Unconditionally, endlessly. That’s powerful, and clearly appealing for many. But what happens to a society in which people can access this kind of unending devotion to their sexual and romantic whims?
