"What is a tent? It's made of fabric. What can fabric protect? You used to be in a building and rainwater would drip on you, so what about the fabric? When the wind blows, it blows away. In the sun, the tent suffocates you. And if it rains, the tent floods and you're left sitting in the street. It's fabric, not nylon. Tents mean humiliation, degradation. Nothing expresses it. We are suffocating. We've been suffocated and humiliated, and there's nothing left. The situation is extremely difficult.”

STORYLINE:
A sandstorm swept through Gaza on Saturday, turning the sky orange and compounding the misery of displaced Palestinians in the enclave.

First responders operating under the Hamas-run Interior Ministry told people to secure their tents to prevent them from being blown away and urged those with respiratory illness to stay inside.

Israel’s war with Hamas has left most of Gaza’s 2 million residents displaced, living in tents and damaged buildings with little protection from the elements.

"Tents mean humiliation, degradation. Nothing expresses it. We are suffocating. We've been suffocated and humiliated, and there's nothing left. The situation is extremely difficult," said Ali Shurrab, a displaced Palestinian from Rafah living in a displacement camp in Khan Younis.

Footage by the Associated Press on Saturday showed tents flapping and trees swaying as cars drove down dust filled streets with little visibility.

"One can barely open his eyes. What can I say? The situation speaks for itself," said Shurrab.
