New Chitose Airport (CTS), located in Chitose, Hokkaido, serves as the main gateway to Japan’s northernmost island. As the busiest airport in Hokkaido and one of the top regional airports in Japan, New Chitose plays a vital role in both domestic and international air travel. Situated approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) from central Sapporo, the airport is strategically placed to handle a steady flow of air traffic year-round—particularly during the popular winter ski season when tourism to Hokkaido surges.

The airport features two parallel runways, 01R/19L and 01L/19R, which allow for smooth and efficient aircraft operations even during Hokkaido’s challenging winter weather conditions. New Chitose handles over 20 million passengers annually, ranking it among the top ten busiest airports in Japan. Its robust operations are supported by major Japanese carriers such as ANA (All Nippon Airways), JAL (Japan Airlines), and budget airlines like Peach Aviation and Jetstar Japan. In addition, New Chitose is served by a number of international airlines, including Korean Air, China Airlines, and EVA Air, which link Hokkaido to key cities across Asia.

While it may not be as large as Japan’s major hubs like Tokyo Haneda or Narita, New Chitose Airport stands out for its unique blend of modern infrastructure, efficient operations, and cultural charm—including an on-site hot spring, shopping complex, and entertainment facilities. This blend enhances the travel experience and reflects the spirit of Hokkaido.

The video aims to showcase this dynamic and beautifully designed airport from multiple vantage points, capturing the drama of aircraft takeoffs and landings against the stunning Hokkaido landscape. While it may not be the easiest airport to plane spot from, New Chitose offers its own unique challenges and rewards. I want this video to highlight that, and to show that with the right timing and angles, watching aircraft at CTS can be a captivating experience for aviation lovers.

I filmed this and own all the rights to it, including but not limited to audio and visual material as I recorded this myself with the goal of showcasing the various planes, airlines and different aircraft you can see flying into one of the worlds busiest airports.
