In this episode of The Last Leopards of Europe, we travel to Armenia, a rugged mountain country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, where the endangered Persian (Caucasian) leopard still survives in the wild.
We explore the history of leopards in the Armenian Highlands, why they nearly vanished in the 20th century, and what changed in recent decades. Armenia now holds a tiny but real breeding nucleus—with around 10 confirmed individuals, and possibly 10–20 leopards using Armenian territory in 2025 (leopards are extremely elusive and difficult to count).
You’ll learn where Armenia’s leopards live today—especially in the southern mountain landscapes like Syunik, Vayots Dzor, and key protected areas—and how they share this ecosystem with other predators such as wolves, brown bears, Eurasian lynx, golden jackals, and striped hyenas.
We also ask the big rewilding questions:
Is there enough prey for leopards to expand? Could restoring large herbivores—like wild horses, wild asses, water buffalo, feral cattle, and even future megafauna ideas—help rebuild a richer food web? And what would it take for the Caucasus to become a true rewilding frontier again?
If you enjoy deep wildlife documentaries and bold rewilding discussions, make sure to subscribe and tell me in the comments:
Can Armenia and the Caucasus become home to more leopards again—maybe even one day a wider community of large predators?
