TEACHER DEMO. This peaceful Christmas carol is on p. 18 of Alfred's Adult Christmas Level 1 book. The melody was composed by the organist Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818. The lyrics were written by a young priest, Joseph Mohr, in 1816. It was first performed on Christmas Eve at the St. Nicholas Parish in the Austrian village of Oberdorf.
