My intent in presenting this abridged selection of passages from the soundtrack of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is to focus in on the character of Spock’s half-brother, the off-beat mystic Sybok, and the spiritual journey he undertakes over the course of the film. The visuals that accompany the music are a futher effort to explore the themes and ideas of this film which resonate with me.
As is typical for a Jerry Goldsmith score for a Star Trek film, many passages celebrate the Enterprise and the main characters we’ve come to know and love so much. Other tracks focus almost exclusively on the characters, settings and ideas which are unique to this film, and it is that latter category which this playlist seeks to explore.
Goldsmith created a unique theme for Sybok which goes through many variations to suit a variety of environments and situations. Nimbus III is brought to life with ethnic sounding percussion and fantasical synthesizer textures. The planet Sha Ka Ree is disarmingly brought into focus with deep brass sounds and a solemn theme fitting for coming face to face with one’s maker.
Other synth sounds seek to give expression to ideas and experiences which ultimately defy exact definitions or indepth analysis. Namely, the unknown and the unknowable. Transcedent ideas and visions.
There are moments of conflict, tension and pain in the film. Goldsmith realizes these with his ever confident bombastic flourishes and his refined and delicate use of strings. Jerry’s score really sells me on the idea that we are on a truly sincere quest for the Truth, even if many other elements of this film fail miserably to do so.
Laurence Luckinbill brought the character of Sybok to life with his heartfelt, ardent performance. Jerry Goldsmith’s score helps me to explore the enigmas and puzzles of life, which Sybok so vehemently lays before us. He enters the room with a resolute look on his face, and Jerry’s music convincingly sets the mood.
While there is so much about this film that went wrong and just does not work, I cannot help but sympathize with what I think the initial idea may have been. The crew of the starship Enterprise had crossed the galaxy many times and had saved it from everything; V’Ger, Khan Noonien Singh, and even a giant, rusty beer can which talks to Earth’s whales. It makes sense to me that the crew of the Enterprise had to be confronted with the challenge of Final Things.
They were beginning to age, they were all living with great loss, emptiness and regrets. They were heroes, but they were no longer young. The dilemmas to which Sybok pointed so vehemently, it makes sense to me that the crew of the Enterprise should be made to grapple with all of that. The execution may have been terribly botched, but I do agree that it’s a very interesting idea for a Star Trek film. It is in that spirit that this selection is offered.
