I really like the new Mission: Impossible - Story and Spectacle exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image in NYC. It is so fascinating and completely immerses you into the world of this franchise.
Upon entering the exhibit, I was instantly engaged and reminded of the various Mission Impossible films. The first thing I saw was a lot of props and outfits directly from the movies. Costumes are something that particularly interests me, so getting to see the different looks was so cool to me. I was fascinated at how well kept and preserved the clothes were. Overall, the entire exhibit features Tom Cruise's incredible talent and abilities. I am astonished at how involved he really is. His devotion to this franchise and his hard work speaks to the incredible success that this project has had. Worldwide, Mission: Impossible has earned $13 Billion in box office. What intrigued me most about this exhibit was being able to learn about all of the different stunts done in all the movies. The thrill and high intensity scenes are what make these films extra special. There are numerous different sections where you can read about the stunts, and watch them in that movie. Plus, they show behind-the-scenes clips of how the crew made them happen. This completely grabbed my attention because I haven’t really thought about how difficult these stunts can be. In the past I always thought most of these stunts were just “movie magic, “however I was completely wrong. Each one required practice, strength and bravery. They take years to plan, create, and prepare for. Tom Cruise is truly the perfect one for the job. I learned that he was inspired by old films which were some of the first to engage in stunt work. The exhibit has a few sections where you can sit and listen to an interview with Cruise, where he talks about his experience with this franchise, and you get a feel for the passion and love he has for this project. The stunt that probably stood out to me the most is in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, when Ethan Hunt climbs the exterior of the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa in Dubai. This is over 2,000 feet tall, and Cruise was suspended into the air for long periods of time while filming this scene. The danger that this stunt requires, together with the bravery and determination is truly astounding and something I’ve only seen in the Mission: Impossible franchise.
I give Mission: Impossible - Story and Spectacle exhibit 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 18, plus adults. The exhibit is running now through December 14, 2025 at the Museum of Moving Image in New York City. It opened in advance of the latest film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning which releases in theaters May 23, 2025. Be sure to check out both the film and the exhibit!
