The transmission eigenvalue problem is inherent to the scattering theory for inhomogeneous media. In this talk we discus its role in understanding essential properties of the relative scattering operator, and as a fundamental building block for many imaging approaches. We present some recent theoretical results on transmission eigenvalues and non-scattering phenomena, and some new applications to the inverse scattering problem.
