Making mistakes as a pilot is not super uncommon. We are human after all. However, for a pilot in control of a 2,000 lb metal tube, a mistake could quickly become serious. That’s why we have so much training. Little mistakes happen and are quickly corrected. On this particular flight, I was flying with a friend and was therefore more distracted — of course no fault to him! Sharing my passion for flying is why I became a pilot! But, I do need to be cognizant of the effect of flying with other people on board and how it can make the ABCs of flying (aviate, navigate, communicate) more challenging to balance. As a result, when the tower told me to make a right downwind entry to the traffic pattern, I defaulted to the standard left hand pattern and flew directly in the path of an incoming jetBlue flight landing from New York. Of course, safety was not compromised at any point, but it was one part of a chain that if pulled further, might not be great. I see this as a big learning moment, and in this video, I reflect on the flight and how I might change what I do in the future as a pilot to keep getting better!
As an aside, this is the first video that I’ve scored a few sections myself. I’ve been experimenting with writing music, learning music theory (way more fun now than my piano days as a kid, for some reason!), and composing for story. It’s certainly quite challenging — and super fun — but I don’t expect to do that for every single video. In this video, it’s probably quite easy to figure out which ones are scored by me and which are regular music from other, far more talented, artists!
