New to distilling or working with grain? Let’s get back to basics!
In this video, I’ll break down what starch conversion is, how it works, and how you can turn grain starches into fermentable sugars using both enzymes and malted grain methods.
Perfect for beginner home distillers, this guide includes cooking steps, temperature control, and enzyme timing — all explained clearly with practical advice.
🔍 What You'll Learn:
✔️ How to convert starches to sugars for fermentation
✔️ Three effective cooking methods
✔️ Enzyme timing and temperature control
✔️ Tips to avoid common beginner mistakes
🛠 Conversion Methods (Quick Reference):
– Ratio of 1kg (2.2lbs) grain to 2.5-3Lt of water
➤ Unmalted Grain (Enzymes):
– 90–95°C for 90 mins
– Add Alpha & Gluco-Amylase
– Test starch, then cool and ferment
➤ Malted Grain (90 Min Cook):
– 65°C for 90 mins
– Test starch, then cool and ferment
➤ Malted Grain (3-Step Cook):
– 65–70°C → 70–75°C → 75–80°C (30 mins each)
– Test starch, then cool and ferment
