I’ve found Fluval Stratum to be a great rooting medium for many plants, for many, many reasons. If you know me at all, you know my obsession with it! 🤤
Here’s why I love it most:
✨ Stellar Drainage & Aeration
It is highly porous, preventing water from pooling around the roots, reducing the risk of rot.
The aerated structure promotes oxygen flow, encouraging faster and healthier root development.
✨ Supports Strong Root Growth
Snake plants root best in loose, well-draining mediums, and stratum provides an ideal texture for roots to anchor and spread.
It prevents roots from becoming too compacted, which can sometimes happen in heavier soils.
✨ Slightly Acidic pH
Stratum has a slightly acidic pH (between 5.5 and 6.5), which can help enhance nutrient availability for young roots.
✨ Helps Maintain Moisture Balance
The substrate retains some moisture while still draining well, preventing the plant from drying out too quickly but avoiding excess water retention.
✨ Clean(ish) & Pest-Resistant
Unlike traditional soil, stratum is less likely to harbor fungus gnats or other soil-borne pests, making it a cleaner option for propagating.
It’s a great alternative to soil or water propagation, especially if you want a cleaner, low-maintenance method. Have you tried it before, or are you thinking about experimenting with it?
