Just like the temperature of porridge, there is the just the right grip for farmers.
Gripping toward the front of the farmer’s handle: In medleys, it is common to have to jump into the farmers and get an uneven grip out of haste. With light farmers in speed determined medley events, we can grip toward the front of the farmers as it insures we land our hands even. We give up the ability to lean into the implement, but we minimize the risk of one farmer angled one direction while the other is angled the opposite direction. If the farmers are the first implementation in the medley, however, gripping towards the back of the handle might be recommended instead.
Gripping in the middle of the farmer’s handle: This is the default for anyone starting out. Most will find this the grip of choice for static farmer’s walk hold events as well. With a balanced farmers, we get even pull on all fingers and minimize swaying of the farmers as they settle into the hands after a pick up in a static hold.
Gripping toward the back of the farmer’s handle: This grip is common among experienced strongmen to both increase speed and even help with grip. By having the grip in the back of the farmer’s handle we thus have the farmers pointed down with the back end higher. Being higher in the back essentially pushes the handle more into the pinky finger side of the hand, which of the four fingers can be the weaker side of the hand. The angle of the farmers down also gives some momentum of the implements forward. Combining this with an aggressive shoulder lean forward will allow for faster farmers run.
The Farmer’s Walk is a staple strength training exercise that challenges grip strength, stability, and endurance. One of the key factors for success in this exercise is finding the right grip on the farmer's handles. Here’s how to optimize your grip for different situations:
Gripping Toward the Front of the Handle:
In medleys, where speed and precision matter, it’s common to jump into the farmer’s walk with an uneven grip. By gripping toward the front of the handle, you can ensure your hands land evenly, which helps prevent one implement from angling in the opposite direction of the other. While this grip sacrifices the ability to lean into the implement, it minimizes the risk of uneven loading and makes your movement more controlled. For lighter farmer's walks in speed-based events, this grip is ideal.
