Welcome to the next Free Play Long Play, where I play through an entire long (2+hours) game in one video. This video features the return to arcades of one of the most popular franchises ever and the last hurrah for its developer/publisher: Gauntlet Legends.
Released in arcades in 1998 by Atari Games, Gauntlet Legends is the third arcade title in the series and first since 1986's "Gauntlet 2". This game is the first with a true plot-a greedy young mage uses magical Rune Stones to summon an evil demon, Skorne, who disposes of the Rune Stones to ensure nobody can stop his reign of evil over the 4 realms. Until now, when the 4 legendary heroes-Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, Archer (formerly Elf)-join with the good wizard Sumner in a quest to find the Rune Stones and banish Skorne back to the Underworld.
Where the first 2 Gauntlet games were top-down, this game is a 3D action RPG that greatly expands on the prior games but keeps the core experience intact. The goal of each area is still to find the Exit, but you also must find the 12 Rune Stones and defeat 4 massive bosses as you play through the 21 stages, each divided into 4 journeys of 5 areas (except Mountain which has 6). Each of the 4 heroes have their own attributes similar to before. Up to 4 players can play together.
The game allows you to enter your initials and a 3-digit password to save your progress (at least until they are reset by operator settings). You gain EXP by fighting enemies which will cause you to level up, increasing your stats. You can level each character up to 99 and increase each attribute to a limit of 999. There is one alternate version of each character that can be unlocked when you level up a character to 10-these alternate versions start with higher stats. At levels 10, 25, 50, 75 and 99 you gain permanent bonuses.
It is also possible to play as Pojo, a chicken, briefly by finding an egg or permanently by entering the right initials & password. Additionally, a Turbo gauge has been added, allowing the player to use a variety of special attacks that can be used at various ranges and can do more damage, and also can give a short speed boost. Turbo recharges constantly. You also have magic to kill enemies and Death. You can collect gold to buy powerups and permanent stat increases.
After you defeat a boss, you receive a special key. Once you have all 4 keys, you can proceed to the 5th area (2 stages) to face Skorne. If you defeat Skorne, what happens next depends on Rune Stones-if you have 11 or fewer, you must go back and replay the first 4 areas until you have them all. If you have all 12, you will proceed to the final area (2 very hard stages) and face Skorne again. Defeat Skorne a second time to complete the game.
Although there is an ending, the game loops infinitely but you will always have all the Rune Stones when you continue. Your stats carry over too.
There are 2 versions of the game, 1.2 & 1.6. This video features version 1.2.
The game was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, one of a few games that benefited from the optional Expansion Pack accessory that increased the N64's RAM. In 2000 it was released for the Sony PlayStation and Sega Dreamcast. The console versions added additional elements, while the Dreamcast version has arcade-perfect graphics & sound. All console versions were published by Midway.
A sequel, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, was released in 2000 by Midway.
(Note: There are a couple areas between journeys early on where some frames/screens are missing. This is due to taking breaks from gameplay and picking up from loading saved states. There may also be spots with audio stuttering issues, which I attempted to mitigate as much as possible. Just an issue with the hardware used for this and some other 1990s/2000s Atari/Midway arcade games)
PS-if there's enough interest I will do a Pojo playthrough video in the future!
