Formation of a chromate ester intermediate: The alcohol reacts with chromium trioxide in the presence of pyridine to form a chromate ester intermediate.

Rearrangement: The chromate ester intermediate rearranges to form a new chromate ester intermediate with a different structure.

Hydrolysis: The chromate ester intermediate is hydrolyzed to form the desired aldehyde or ketone.

Compared to other oxidation methods, the Fetizon's oxidation is milder and more selective. It is particularly useful for the oxidation of alcohols containing sensitive functional groups such as double bonds or halogens, which may be affected by other oxidation reagents. The reaction can be carried out at room temperature or slightly elevated temperatures and does not require the use of a heavy metal catalyst.

However, the reaction has some limitations and may not be suitable for all substrates. The reaction conditions may need to be optimized to obtain high yields and selectivity, and the use of pyridine and dichloromethane or acetonitrile may limit the scalability of the reaction.
