On May 25, 1979, American Airlines Flight 191 was scheduled to fly from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California in a DC-10, with 258 passengers and a crew of 13. The DC-10 took off from runway 32R. As it was taking off however, engine #1 detached from the left wing and landed on the runway. The aircraft got to an altitude of a little over 300 feet while leaking fuel and hydraulic fluid. 31 seconds after takeoff, the doomed DC-10 crashed into an aircraft hangar short of the runway, killing everyone on board and 2 people on the ground, making it the deadliest aviation disaster in US History. It was later determined that the engine had a damaged pylon due to improper maintenance procedures done at American Airlines. R.I.P. to those 273 souls who died in the crash of American Airlines Flight 191
