According to local legend, the temple was founded in the 16th century by the Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha.
Nearby there is also a small cave known for something unusual: sacred sea snakes that local people believe protect the temple.

Uno de los templos más famosos de Bali está construido sobre una roca en medio del océano.
El Templo de Tanah Lot parece flotar sobre el mar, pero cuando baja la marea es posible caminar por las rocas y acercarse hasta su base.

Según la tradición, el templo fue fundado en el siglo XVI por el sacerdote hindú Dang Hyang Nirartha.
