Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op.77 was composed between 1947 and 1948 and dedicated to David Oistrakh, with its premiere taking place in Leningrad in 1955. This concerto departs from the traditional concerto form, adopting a symphonic four-movement structure, in which the solo violin and orchestra interact as equals while conveying intense psychological expression. Throughout the work, there is a strong contrast of emotions and inner tension, with interplay between minor and major tonalities, dramatic rhythms, melodic motifs, repetition, and variation techniques, creating a unique musical narrative. In the returning A' section, the initially presented theme is recapitulated with variations and ornamentation, bringing the movement to a resolution and relieving the tension. The solo violin and orchestra engage in a dialogue that goes beyond a simple melody-accompaniment relationship, sharing both tension and emotional expression. Throughout the movement, Shostakovich’s characteristic inner solitude and emotional complexity are revealed, making the first movement serve as a psychological and narrative starting point for the entire concerto.
