Becoming a U.S. citizen through military service is a way to fast-track your citizenship process.

Let's break it down step by step so you know exactly what to expect.

1.) Check your eligibility. You need to be serving or have served honorably in the U.S. military. And if you're on active duty, you can apply after one year or one day of service, depending on the circumstances.

2.) Fill out the Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. You can do this online or via mail. Make sure to look at the form's instructions in order for you to submit all of the required documents, including proof of your military service.

3.) You'll also need to submit Form N-426, which is a request for certification of military or naval service. This form confirms your service and must be signed by an officer in your chain of command.

4.) Is to submit your forms, that being the N-400 and the N-426, along with any supporting documents. And remember that you may not have to pay the filing fees because you're a military member.

5.) In most cases, you'll have to attend a fingerprint appointment, but do not worry because they take generally less than 30 minutes.

6.) Is to attend the citizenship interview and take the civics test.

7.) Is taking the oath of allegiance. After your application is approved, you'll attend a ceremony where you will officially become a U.S. citizen.
