Stephanie Kitchens at Hightower Stitching #249 tutorial: petite log cabin blocks with 1" strips (4 1/2") have a special charm for hand and/or machine stitching.
In this video, Stephanie discusses ways to organize fabrics, sewing and pressing blocks, and how to move from making 1 block at a time to several blocks and maintaining precision in piecing. Points from her 2 note cards:
1. Practice a block using #'s from the article and adjust as needed.
2. Use the same ruler for cutting all 1" strips.
3. Great way to use orphan fabrics.
4. After making a couple of blocks one at a time, I went to chain stitching, when possible.
5. To make 4 large blocks an 18 1/2" strip of medium or dark 1" strip
will yield 12- 1 1/2" squares for the centers of the squares.
6. As you sew, use the center square to show you that the new strips are
correctly placed.
7. Press at the end of the 3rd round. As a piece is added finger press away
from the center on each round.
8. Make a 4 1/2" template with a center point and diagonal lines for squaring up each block.
9. Cut cream/tan fabric into small lengths. Optional: Cut dark fabric into small lengths or use longer 1" strips for chain stitching.
