"The Federal Hostels At Baker Lake" were situated in the hamlet of Baker Lake, Nunavut’s only inland community, located at the mouth of the Thelon River, on the shore of Baker Lake. The Federal Hostels were opened January 21st 1956 and were closed January 22nd 1968, with an interim closure from June 21st 1961 to December 31st 1961. The hostels were known as: North Hostel #19 and South Hostel #20 and were non-denominational. The Federal Hostels At Baker Lake were also known by the following aliases: "Baker Lake Federal Hostel", "Buildings 19 and 20 at Baker Lake", "The Temporary Hostel at Baker Lake", "Baker Lake Federal Day School Pupil Residence", "North Hostel and South Hostel at Baker Lake" and "Qamani’tuaq Indian Residential School". The first Baker Lake Federal Hostel building opened on January 21st 1956. The Hostel building was temporarily closed, from June 21st 1961 to December 31st 1961. In January 1962, two hostel buildings were in operation, the North Hostel #19 and the South Hostel # 20. The two buildings were located across from each other and were furnished with bunk beds. The residents were cared for by house parents. The majority of the children came from Baker Lake and camps in the surrounding area. Some children came from farther away, in Ferguson Lake. The years during which the hostel was operated solely, or in part by the Federal Government as a residence for school age students was 1961 (January to July) and January 9th 1962 to January 22nd 1968. Composed of two eight-bed units, one for boys and one for girls, the hostel remained in continuous operation, until January 1968.
