After having retired for nine years, Jody Chiang took the stage once again, singing some of her fans’ favorites. Despite her time away from the spotlight, Chiang had not lost any of her charm.

By the time she finished her third song, there was not a dry eye in the stadium, which hosted more than 20,000 people. Another 50,000 tuned in to watch the show on TV or online, with many commenting that they were also moved. Nine years ago, Chiang stepped away from the limelight to embark on an arduous battle with cancer. On Saturday night, she returned to the stage in the Taipei Dome for the National Day Gala. Chiang admitted that she was quite nervous.

I’m really happy to be here today for the National Day Gala. Just now someone asked me backstage if I was nervous? I said, nervous? How could I be nervous? Do you think I was nervous when I sang just now? How could I not be?! I almost cried.

For her comeback performance, Chiang stayed up the night before, rehearsing till 4:00 in the morning. She wanted to get back in touch with her fans, and the only way she knew how was through her singing.

Aside from Chiang, the gala included performances by Taiwanese pop singers Huang Fei and Weng Li-you, singing sensation Jimmy Lin, Indigenous singer Samingad, rapper OSN, and Ally Shen, all of whom put together a truly diverse show that dazzled the audience.
