A cold seep is where there is liquid coming out of the sea floor. This can be a gas like methane, a fluid like groundwater or brines. Brine pools are highly dense and salty liquid that form pools at the bottom of the seafloor. These areas are known as chemosynthetic, which means bacteria can produce food from the chemicals being released by these seeps even without the presence of sunlight. This process is very close to how plants create food with photosynthesis.
Video produced by GFOE video team during the Gulf of Mexico 2018 expedition.
All footage was gathered aboard NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer with ROV Deep Discoverer and ROV Seirios, which are designed, maintained, and operated by the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration in partnership with NOAA Ocean Exploration.
