Love the mixer and all of the audio functions. Looks just like effects units in a rack, and a mixing console. True love for an audio nut like me. Problem was latency. Can't really know because my graphics card took a dump, so I'm operating on the internal graphics. Using 4G of ram though, and the processor is not operating at full capacity, so I can't help but think that the bottleneck is the graphics card. (Or lack thereof)
CANNOT USE MP2 FILES! Dang... My Handycam records in MP2. MEP 18 trial version does not allow import of mp2 files. Still, I looked into some means of getting it to do it and found that Magix has a real issue with mp2 files. If that's what you use, don't buy this software until they can show you that the issue is resolved. I had to use an OLD program to convert the mp2's to avi for a substantial loss of quality, and then mixdown in mp4. We'll see how it looks.
Much like Sony, the help section isn't much help. The whole idea is to learn how to use it, not just the definition of the term. There is also GOBS of truly useless headings like "Clipboard", which will take you to a glossary. If you want to look up "keyboard shortcuts" or "shortcuts", don't bother. It's not in there. It's under "Abbreviations" which I found purely by accident. (Among other things)
Common tasks seem to be over-complicated, and the quick, one click options and icons are thing that I don't use often. I.e., common tasks that take one or two clicks in other programs take 4 or 5 in MEP, providing you've found them and/or can remember where they are.
Fast forward only goes to 4X speed, but to their credit, when you slow something down, the playback is smooth and looks like you actually recorded in a higher frame rate.
It will do quirky things to you, like moving the timeline when you click something that shouldn't make it move. Then you don't know where you are and have to go scrolling back and forth to find your position again. This occurs toward the end of a multi-thousand edit segment, but only gets worse as you go. It finally crashed itself when I attempted to add some 3-D title editing. The only real way to make it stable on my machine would be to edit all the video, render it into whatever format I want as a final, open that file and start a new project and add the soundtrack, render it again, start a new project and add the titles.
I ain't goin' there...
I'd probably use this program if 1) I had a quad core machine, 2) Knew that there was MUCH more than the ridiculously low amount of transition and Title effects in the paid version, and 3) Was able to import MP2 files. The rest of the stuff is learning curve.
