Why do we celebrate Holi ? Story of Holi | Holi Story in English
Holi is one of the most colorful and joyful festivals of India. It is known as the Festival of Colors. Holi is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil.
The story of Holi is connected to the legend of Prahlad, a young and faithful devotee of Lord Vishnu. Prahlad was the son of a powerful and cruel king named Hiranyakashipu. The king wanted everyone to worship him as a god, but Prahlad refused and continued to worship Lord Vishnu. This made the king very angry. He tried many times to punish and even kill his own son, but Prahlad’s strong faith protected him every time.
Finally, Hiranyakashipu asked his sister Holika for help. Holika had a magical boon that made her immune to fire. She sat in a burning fire with Prahlad on her lap, hoping he would be burned alive. However, due to Prahlad’s devotion and God’s blessings, Holika was burned to ashes while Prahlad remained safe. This event symbolizes the victory of good over evil. The night before Holi is celebrated as Holika Dahan, when people light bonfires to remember this story.
This event shows that truth and faith always win over evil.
