It was only a short time ago we were on pip watch and are now in awe of how much our Big Bear eaglets have developed. Sandy & Luna not only have grown in size, but also in learned skills. Jackie & Shadow’s parenting skills coupled with Sandy & Luna’s innate abilities provide them with what they need to soar to new heights.

After exchanging a few beaky kisses this morning, Mom arrived with a new stick for her kids. After Sandy played with a flighty feather, both eaglets joined in with some nestorations. Their rearranging of the twigs helps keep the nest in tip top shape. This is an inherent behavior as eagles are obsessive nest builders.

Shadow arrived with a fish delivery as Sandy took to some self-feeding. Luna struck a beautiful horaltic pose before enjoying a few bites. (This pose helps eagles to thermoregulate). While Luna was munching, Sandy did some twig twiddling. Feedings are becoming less frequent now and resembling that of an adult eagle, with the ability to store enough food in their crops to last several days.

The day continued with a fluff delivery from Shadow; he must have heard the kids were rearranging the nest. Their excitement led to more hops and wingers making the nest almost look like a trampoline! Sandy & Luna are getting so strong and adept at hopping a little higher with each passing moment. Later on, Shadow chose to perch in the attic, his right talon as relaxed as could be. Leave it to Luna to notice, and copy cat Dad by adorably foot lifting to mimic him.

The day’s nest activities continued with more jumps, hops, wingers, independent feedings and the sounds of some soft and sweet eaglet chirps. Luna was so delighted with a fluff delivery from Jackie, that the excitement could not be contained and let out the most adorable squee. After more hopping around the nest, they settled in for a well deserved afternoon rest.

Sandy & Luna’s journey continues to bring us so much joy. We are fascinated with their continued transformation and watching them grow day by day.
