Materials
Binding: leather (goat, king snake, sheep). Text: acrylics, gauche, ink, and watercolor on Peter’s handmade paper.
Flourish is an illustrated poem sharing the hope found by the author during the pandemic, gained by observing the tenacity of California’s Sierra Nevada wild alpine flora; its ability to flourish despite the harsh environment and civilization’s encroachment. We employed our nested accordion structure to represent the uncontrolled forces of nature. The binding juxtaposes the skin of a snake, which we found run over on a mountain road and later tanned, with onlay images of vibrant living flowers, as a metaphor for possible endings, both of the pandemic and of wild nature facing the consequences of global warming.
