From a young boy who went to bed with his tennis racquet to NCAA National Championship coach, this is the story of Hendrik Bode!

Growing up in his home country of Germany, Hendrik was given his first tennis racquet by a friend of his parents. He then took to the wall of his house & hit tennis balls against it almost everyday! Hendrik would soon discover a tennis club nearby his home & everyday after school, he would visit the club & play with anybody & everybody who wanted to hit some balls with him. As he got more reps under his belt, Hendrik became a stronger tennis player, which eventually got the attention of his country's local Tennis Federation. From there, he would receive high level coaching as well as the opportunity to play tennis tournaments on a regular basis. After he graduated high school, Hendrik didn't have a clue of what he wanted to do with his newly-found adult life. A friend of his talked to him about the idea of playing college tennis in the United States. Excited about a chance to play more tennis, Hendrik said yes & made the trip across to two ponds to eventually land him at Hawaii Pacific University. As a Shark, Hendrik let his racquet do the talking under then Coach Stefan Pompulov, achieving many awesome feats such becoming the #1 individually ranked player in all of NCAA Division 2! He played for four years & even became a Graduate Assistant Coach for the team after that. However, one faithful day, the then HPU athletic director asked Hendrik if he'd like to take over the HPU Men's Tennis program (as they were looking for another head coach at the time. As many of you may have predicted, Hendrik accepted the offer & has been mentoring & coaching young competitive players there ever since! As the years progressed, Hendrik had created a powerhouse in college tennis, putting his team in a position to contend for an NCAA Division 2 National Team Championship. In 2014 & 2015, the Shark made it all the way to the Division 2 Finals where they fell short both times. In 2016, Coach Hendrik & HPU's men's team finally broke through & claimed their 1st (& still only) NCAA National Championship!

Today, Hendrik Bode serves his 8th years as Head Coach for the Hawaii Pacific University Men's College Tennis Program, continuing to produce strong teams further contending to be the best in NCAA Division 2. He also mentors & coaches high performance juniors in Hawaii who aspire to be the best & simply play as much as they can!
