Typically, the prime physical years are considered to be between 20 and 30 for most adults. After this period, the aging process gradually triggers a decline in various physical attributes, including bone density, muscle mass, muscle quality, and muscle strength.
There are multiple reasons behind the loss of muscle mass, strength, power, and muscle tissue quality as we age, starting around 30, with an even faster decline after 50. One contributing factor is the tendency for adults to become less active and engage in less rigorous strength training or exercise routines.

The saying "use it or lose it" might sound cliché, but it holds truth: muscle strength and mass will decline after 40 if consistent efforts are not made to maintain or build muscle in your 40s, 50s, and 60s.
Apart from behavioral or lifestyle changes that make us weaker and lead to the loss of lean body mass as we age, there are also physiological or biological aging processes that make it challenging to build or maintain muscle strength, mass, and bone density in your 60s compared to your younger years.

Equally exciting is the evidence suggesting that strength training can reduce signs of aging at the cellular level. Growing research demonstrates how aging occurs at the cellular level with various markers of the aging process, such as shortened telomeres (the ends of chromosomes) and mitochondrial dysfunction.
In some cases, your biological age, determined by various cellular signs of aging, may be lower than your chronological age. Lowering your biological age essentially means living in a younger body than your chronological age suggests, contributing to increased longevity and improved functional independence as you age.

Here are some guidelines on how to build muscle after the age of 60:

Consistency in strength training is crucial for muscle development in your 60s, but it's equally important to allow sufficient time for rest and recovery. Ensure you take a break of at least 24 to 48 hours between workouts targeting the same muscle groups. Aging slows down workout recovery, and lifting heavy too frequently without adequate rest can hinder the reparative process of muscle protein synthesis, compromising muscle mass development and increasing the risk of injury. While body part split routines can be effective for more frequent training, research suggests that three full-body strength training sessions per week may be more effective in muscle building, although the study primarily involved younger men, making it unclear if the same principles apply to those over 60.

Contrary to the belief that seniors should stick to lighter weights, studies indicate that lifting heavy weights within the recommended strength continuum for hypertrophy (8 to 12 reps per set with 65 to 85% of your 1RM) is effective.
