We’re onto our second myth about aid and development — and it’s probably the one we hear most often: that foreign aid money goes directly to the people who need it most.

If you’ve assumed that’s how aid works, you’re not alone. But the reality looks very different. Despite long-standing commitments from donor governments, only a small proportion of aid funding goes directly to organisations based in the Global South. Instead, the majority continues to flow through organisations in the Global North.

To help us unpack this myth, we’re joined by our second guest, Eshban Kwesiga from the Global Fund for Community Foundations, who shares insights into:

why aid money is still largely channelled to Western organisations

how power and funding biases shape the sector

and what could be done differently to support locally led development
