William Joseph Earle, known as Bill, was a remarkable Australian athlete known for his impressive performance in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. At the Tokyo Games, he competed in the men's 4 x 100 relay, a challenging event that requires not only speed but astute Strategy and strength. The Australian team's time was only a mere 1.1 second from the outright winner
His journey from Stawell to the Olympic stage is a testament to his perseverance and determination. Bill Earle’s career in teaching has taken him from the Western Suburbs of Melbourne to The UK and Canada and Back
Bill and his family are synonymous with the Stawell Gift which is Australia's oldest and richest short-distance running race. Bill’s grandmother was responsible for providing the Gold medal for the winner. It replaced the gift of a goat that was part of the original wining prize cache.
The Footscray Mechanic's Institute - established in 1856, had the honour of hosting his recent presentation which was introduced by Doug Clymo, life member of the FMI and very long term friend of Bills.
