There are a few tricks to hiring amazing, high quality writers off of Upwork.

First, you want to be hyper specific in your job posting. Explain who you're looking for, what the steps to success look like...

Talk about work expectations, time commitments, responsibilities, and the pay.

You want to give your writer as much detail as possible. This helps to get you two off on the right foot and know your responsibilities to each other.

Once you have your job post created, I like to wait several hours to let applicants apply. Then it's time to filter.

I like to discard anyone who says "Dear Sir/Madam". That means they didn't read my job post (I always introduce myself and say my name).

Sales people might not have to be detail oriented. Writers do though. So Dear Sir/Madam means a hard pass from me.

I also like to filter by the sample articles that someone sends me. Remember that sample articles are the writer's BEST work. If you see a bunch of small errors or grievous mistakes, expect worse for your own job.

Just by filtering for those two things, you'll reduce your applicants down to a manageable number. Pick a few that you like and give them a test article.

It doesn't have to be long, just long enough to give you a feel for how well your writer performs.

I recommend providing a template and word counts for this test article. Give your writer as little room to fail as possible and see how well he/she follows instructions.

Once you've filtered your applicants and hired your all-star writer, it's time for you to do your job:

I find that providing templates goes a long way towards standardizing your quality that you get from writers. Similar to the instructions above, I like to make these as detailed as possible.

And then always provide feedback to your writers. Expect there to be a lot of feedback when your writer is starting out. It's natural, no worries.

But do let your writer know what she is doing right, wrong, and what areas have room for improvement. Be gentle but honest.

If you don't provide feedback, your writer will only decline in quality.

Last piece of advice: hire fast, fire fast. Don't spend too much time picking a writer. There are millions of great writers in the world.

And don't stick with a stinker. If it isn't working out, it's best for everyone if you cut ties.
