Born in Eisenach, Germany (the birth town of J.S. Bach), Johann Wilhelm Hertel was the son and grandson of professional musicians. When still quite young, he traveled with his his father, who was an expert viol player, in order to accompany him on the harpsichord. He later studied the violin with Franz Benda, who was famous at that time. Hertel held a number of positions in his life, including organist, composer at the courts of several dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, court councilor and private secretary to princess Ulrike. In addition, we taught music. The present sonata, published when Hertel was 28 years old, is written in a style typical of that time, one that is reminiscent of that of C.P.E. Bach.
