The North Coast 500 is described as Scotland's answer to Route 66. It's a scenic route of just over 500 miles (800km) following the coast around the far north of mainland Scotland, starting and finishing at Inverness Castle.
The A896 runs for about 34 miles (55km), heading west from the A832 at Kinlochewe to meet the sea at Loch Torridon, then turning south at Shieldaig, cutting across the Applecross peninsula to meet the sea at Loch Kishorn. The road then heads east through Lochcarron, along the banks of Loch Carron to meet the A890 near Strathcarron. The road is mainly single-track road with passing places, with a few more modern wider sections.
This video shows a westbound journey along the A896, from the A832 at Kinlochewe to a junction near Torridon, passing south of the mountains Beinn Eighe and Liathach.
