The apartment smelled like mildew and defeat. Maya Torres stood at the kitchen sink of her Section 8 housing unit, water running brown before clearing, counting the days until the fifteenth when her disability check would arrive. Forty-two years old, her back permanently damaged from a warehouse accident three years ago, she moved through the cramped two-bedroom with the careful deliberation of someone whose body had become an enemy.
Her daughter Sofia slept in the smaller bedroom, fourteen years old and growing too fast for clothes Maya could afford to replace. The girl's jeans stopped two inches above her ankles now, exposing mismatched socks worn thin at the heels. Her winter coat, inherited from a church donation bin, had a broken zipper Maya kept meaning to fix with a safety pin she couldn't seem to find.
The living room window overlooked a parking lot where shopping carts congregated like lost cattle, abandoned by people too tired to return them properly. Maya's 2003 Camry sat in the corner spot, its check engine light a permanent amber accusation she'd learned to ignore. The mechanic wanted eight hundred dollars for repairs. She had fifty-three in her checking account and seventeen days until the next deposit.
Dawn came gray and cold through curtains that didn't quite close, light creeping across walls painted industrial beige by landlords who'd given up pretending anyone would stay here by choice. Maya heated water for instant coffee, the microwave beeping three times before she could silence it, not wanting to wake Sofia before absolutely necessary.
The girl needed sleep. Needed more than Maya could provide. Needed a life that didn't involve counting pennies and calculating which bills could be paid late without triggering shutoffs.
Sofia's school had called yesterday about the upcoming science camp. One hundred seventy-five dollars for three days of outdoor education that might as well have been a thousand. Maya had promised to think about it, knowing thinking wouldn't change mathematics. The disability check was twelve hundred a month. Rent took eight hundred. Food, utilities, phone, medication—the numbers never aligned properly, never left room for science camps or new jeans or fixing check engine lights that might mean the difference between getting to physical therapy appointments and missing them.
She carried her coffee to the couch, its springs broken in a pattern that matched her body's habitual positions, and opened the letter that had arrived three days ago. She'd read it twenty times already, trying to make the words mean something different than what they said.
The letterhead read Martinez and Associates, Estate Attorneys, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her grandfather's name appeared in the first paragraph. Rafael Torres, deceased at ninety-one, had named Maya as sole beneficiary of his personal property. Not money. Not a house. Not anything that might actually change her situation. Just personal property, which the attorney's letter specified meant a tool chest and its contents.
Her grandfather. She'd barely known him. He'd lived in New Mexico her whole life while she'd grown up in El Paso with her mother, who'd had complicated feelings about her father. Complicated meaning angry. Complicated meaning years of silence broken only by obligation phone calls on holidays that left everyone feeling worse.
Rafael Torres had been a carpenter, she knew that much. Had worked construction his whole life, building houses for other people while living in a trailer park himself. Had never married after Maya's grandmother died young. Had been, according to Maya's mother, stubborn and proud and impossible to help.
Maya's mother had died seven years ago, liver failure from drinking that had started slow and accelerated fast. Before the end, in one of those terrible hospital room conversations nobody wants to have, she'd said things about Rafael that Maya only half understood. How he'd given everything away. How he'd let people take advantage. How he'd died with nothing because he'd never learned to hold on to what was his.
