When the massive San Francisco earthquake struck at 5:12 AM on April 18, 1906, the Palace Hotel—the world's largest and most expensive hotel—was the only major building in the financial district to survive the initial shaking, with its 755 rooms and seven-story courtyard intact. But as fires spread across the ruined city, the hotel's 28,000-gallon rooftop reservoir and private water system couldn't stop the flames, and guests and staff watched from the street as the $5 million palace that had hosted presidents and kings burned for three days straight. This is the story of how the hotel that survived the earthquake couldn't survive the fire, and how its architect committed suicide when he saw his greatest work destroyed.
