What is an effective date for VA disability benefits, and why does it matter? In this video, we explain how the VA decides when your compensation should begin.
An effective date is the earliest point the VA determines you became entitled to benefits. Filing within one year of discharge usually sets your effective date as the day after separation. Filing later typically means the date the VA received your claim or when your entitlement arose.
For supplemental claims, the effective date is generally the day you filed with new and relevant evidence. Veterans with presumptive conditions may receive effective dates tied to changes in the law if they file within one year of that change.
For increased ratings, your effective date may be based on when you filed or when medical evidence shows your condition worsened, with a possible one-year lookback.
If you believe your effective date is wrong or need help understanding your options, our office can guide you.
