Welcome back to Yonah Mountain Farms!
In today’s video, we’re doing something different on our third lease — formerly cornfield and now highly degraded land. For the first time, we’re combining goats and cattle in front of our pasture-raised laying hens to hit this overgrown paddock hard and reclaim it for productive pasture.
Why?
Because the tall weeds and brush have gotten ahead of us. And while goats have done a great job knocking them back, we wanted to increase the impact by stacking species.
Here’s what we cover:
Why we switched from 4-netting to 3-netting chicken paddocks
Why that didn’t work as well as hoped
Our setup for moving cattle and goats together
Why we don’t feed grain, worm, or trim hooves on our closed Kiko herd
The benefits of hardiness, parasite resistance, and full forage diets
We’ll follow up with a video tomorrow showing what kind of impact the combined animals made. This is part of our long-term mission to regenerate damaged land using animal impact, timing, and movement.
Thanks for following along — and as always, feel free to ask questions in the comments!
