'The Sheik of Araby' is a song that was written in 1921, lyrics by Harry B. Smith and Francis Wheeler, with music by Ted Snyder.
It was composed in response to the popularity of the Rudolph Valentino feature film The Sheik.
Initially a pop song, it was adopted by early jazz bands, especially in New Orleans, making it a jazz standard.
Composer Ted Snyder (1881-1965) was a prolific writer of popular songs and was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 1970.
In 1909, when he was running his own publishing company he hired a young man as a staff writer who was just starting out. Snyder thought he displayed a lot of promise. His name was Irving Berlin. They went on to become publishing partners.
This version of 'The Sheik Of Araby' by Bert Kaempfert and his Orchestra comes from a nine LP box set titled 'A Swinging Safari' issued by the Reader's Digest.
The compilation features alternate performances by Bert Kaempfert and James Last.
'The Sheik Of Araby' comes from disc 3, 'Dance Time' (side 1 track 6).
