Few works tell a story as vividly as the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto. Composed in 1959 by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang, the piece is inspired by the legendary tale of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai: two lovers whose devotion transcends fate.
The music unfolds like a drama: youthful innocence, blossoming love, heartbreak, and finally transformation. Sweeping melodies and lyrical passages give way to moments of intensity and longing, before the story resolves in a luminous, almost otherworldly ending where the lovers are united as butterflies.
Richly expressive and deeply emotional, the concerto has become one of the most cherished works of the twentieth century, beloved for its ability to blend storytelling with unforgettable melody.
Jasmine Choi transcribed and performed this violin concerto on flute and this live concert was the world-premiere of this flute and orchestra version.
