Australian Federal Police have released an image confirming alleged tobacco syndicate figure Kaz Hamad is in custody at a secret location in Iraq following his arrest in Baghdad in mid January. Iraqi authorities describe the 41 year old as highly dangerous, alleging involvement in shootings, murders, kidnappings, extortion, arson and drug offences.
In northern New South Wales, police uncovered a large cannabis operation and what they described as a makeshift zoo at a Collombatti property. Brendan White, 39, was arrested after officers allegedly found 52 hydroponic cannabis plants, 11 kilograms of cannabis leaf, a firearm, and dozens of native and exotic animals including a saltwater crocodile, snakes, lizards, hedgehogs, dogs and cats.
On the Central Coast, Raptor Squad officers under Strike Force Bancroft seized nine unauthorised firearms, ammunition and commercial quantities of drugs during coordinated raids linked to the Nomads outlaw motorcycle club. The investigation escalated after a crash at San Remo, where police allegedly located pistols and large quantities of methylamphetamine and MDMA in abandoned bags.
Police have also lost track of former high profile bikie figure Angelo Pandeli following his deportation from Dubai. The 55 year old had been under monitoring by state and federal authorities after returning to Australia but has not been located for about two months.
In Queensland, Operation Xray Blacksmith concluded after a six month investigation into a Rockhampton based cannabis trafficking syndicate. Police seized more than 200 kilograms of cannabis and over $200,000 in cash. Four people have been charged with trafficking and supply offences.
Under Strike Force Torino in New South Wales, a 40 year old Comanchero associate was arrested in Matraville and charged with supplying a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs and breaching bail. He was refused bail as investigations continue.
Also under Strike Force Torino, Reece Iaria, a close friend of NRL player Nathan Cleary, was charged with 15 offences including large scale drug supply, firearm offences and money laundering. Police allegedly seized cocaine, testosterone, lidocaine, electronic devices and a gel blaster during searches. Iaria was initially refused bail days before his wedding but was granted last minute Supreme Court bail and released in time for the ceremony. There is no suggestion of Nathan Cleary’s involvement. Iaria’s case returns to court in April.
In Victoria, a major report into the CFMEU under former leader John Setka alleges serious corruption and criminal infiltration. Prepared by Geoffrey Watson KC, the report claims outlaw motorcycle clubs including the Comancheros and Rebels were given influence over construction sites, with bikie affiliated delegates placed in positions of authority.
