I was responsible for monitoring economic sanctions against Russia from the British Embassy in Moscow from 2014-2019 and upon my return to the UK, authorised around half of all UK sanctions against Russia, including after the war in Ukraine started.
All that being said, I long considered that sanctions were ineffective and, in fact, self-defeating. Here's my insider's account of why.
