White matter hyperintensity location and post-stroke cognition

Описание: Floor de Kort, PhD, from University Medical Center Utrecht, Urecht, Netherlands, details her research on the location of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and their impact on post-stroke cognition. Post-stroke cognitive impairment affects up to half of stroke patients and is a major cause of long-term disability. In Dr de Kort’s study, it was found that total WMH volume was strongly related to function in key brain domains responsible for processing speed, language and verbal memory, and attention and executive functioning. Two major strategic white matter tracts were identified in the study, where WMH volume was more strongly associated with post-stroke cognitive performance compared to the WMH global burden. Dr de Kort emphasizes the importance of considering additional factors in post-stroke cognitive impairment beyond total WMH volume, such as pre-existing brain damage and both the burden and location of WMH. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference in Basel, Switzerland.
