The slide occurred Tuesday morning about 20 miles northwest of Lake Tahoe during heavy snowfall that dropped up to three feet in just over a day. Officials say the incident is the deadliest skiing avalanche in modern U.S. history, surpassing a 1982 disaster that killed seven people.
