The field of nanoscience offers many, many opportunities to create exciting materials (for example, the next generation lithium ion battery for electric vehicles). But many scientists worry that it also presents potential risks both to humans and the environment. What can we learn from cautionary tales from the past? Can the proactive design of nanomaterials help us overcome some of our biggest technological challenges while also taking care of the environment?
Christy Haynes is the Elmore H. Northey Professor of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota; her research group has a non-traditional focus on interdisciplinary science, working at the interface of analytical, biological, and materials chemistry. Having graduated 15 chemistry PhD’s (and many more undergraduate researchers) in the last 11 years, she is focused not only on doing great bench science but also training the next generation of scientific leaders and communicators.
