Brett Bodine had trouble in 1st round qualifying for the 2000 Brickyard 400 and was only 44th fastest. He didn't think he would have a great lap for 2nd round qualifying.
However, he ripped a 181.072 mph lap, then a (wait for Tom Carnegie) new track record for a stock car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was just a scratch faster than Ricky Rudd's pole sitting time the previous day. Because it was 2nd round qualifying, he had to start 26th.
But, it was emotional moment for the Bodine family. Brett was struggling badly in his self-owned #11 car from 1996 to 2003 and didn't have many great moments during this era. However, this was a small spotlight to shine with his small team as the track record holder at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Geoffrey Bodine embraced Brett like Darrell and Michael Waltrip did a day earlier.
