Varanasi or Benaras or Banaras (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Varanasi`s Prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrevealed. Mark Twain, the English author and literature, who was enthralled by the legend and sanctity of Benaras, once wrote : “Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together. ”
From the words of renowned writer, director, composer Sri Satyajit Ray in his Feluda story of "Jay Baba Felunath", we come to know as Kashi is the second home of us, Bengalis, and naturally it has been in our hearts from long. Entering the city you can smell a holy vibe all around, the streets, the temples, the culture and everything has a magical power in it. The Ganga Aroti of Dashashwamedh Ghat, Jantar Mantar, Kashi Viswanath temple, the ghats of Banaras and what not. You can give a holy dip in the Ganga and start your day. From there you can explore the ghats, Ramnagar Fort, the street-foods, lassi, pan and end up in Godowlia More from where you can give a holy visit to the Kashi Viswanath Temple. Thereafter you can end your day by watching the beautiful, jaw-dropping Ganga Aroti while sitting in a boat. Trust me, exploring the banks of Ganga on a boat will surely give you the vibes of Maganlal Meghraj :)
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple holds immense significance to Hindus as it is revered as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is visited by more than 7 million devotees every year. Earlier the temple area was only 3000 square feet which has now enlarged to about 5 lakh square feet to be able to accommodate 50000-75000 devotees at one time in the temple and temple premises.
